The American photographer and writer Brooks Jensen has written many motivating books and essays, and he's particularly good at encouraging photographers to work on projects, or series of connected pictures. His website allows you to download PDFs of some of his completed sets, and he also explains what he is thinking about, what motivates him to create these pictures.
These sets of pictures - you can call them projects, folios, essays - are exactly what we ask photography students to produce for assessment projects.

Fantastic photographs, I really like! Great use of light, shadow, simple compositions, and depth of field. Might try some like this myself, or maybe not quite yet?
