Street photography is a branch of photojournalism and it is about making observations about life in city streets. It is not posed or set up. Often this type of photography has a sense of surreal humour, often created by framing people and elements that are unconnected in real life, but appear connected in the photo frame. Surreal juxtapositions and playing with people, street adverts and signs, is the order of the day. It originated in France in the '30s and '40s and has a strong sense of the absurd.
This is one of the reasons why photography is so often restricted in shopping centres. Having spent so much money on advertising, they don't really want photo scruffs coming along and undermining their corporate message with silly visual jokes.
