NQ photographers have been sepia toning prints with chemical toners in the darkroom. It is possible to replicate this technique in Photoshop, from colour originals, by using the duotone technique. Duotone just means two tones, one of which is black. So you have an image that is made up of black and one other colour. The colour is described using the Pantone colour referencing system that is used to describe ink colours in printing presses for magazine publishing.
To do this, open a colour file. Go to image>mode and select greyscale. Then go to image>mode again and select duotone. Click in the 2nd ink box, and choose a colour. If it is sepia, then one of the yellows would suit.
A duotone file can only be saved as a large PSD file. If you want to save it as a JPEG, which I had to in order to post the picture here, then go to mode again, and select RGB. This keeps the colour that you have created and saves it as a colour file.
Sepia suits an image that has a romantic and nostalgic feel.
