HNC - Flash Techniques

 Photographers who produce pictures for magazines and newspapers that accompany an article are called editorial photographers. Corporate photography is work that is representing a company, business or organisation and trying to show it at its best. Many editorial photographers also do (better paid) corporate work, using similar techniques. The main difference is that, when working for the magazine, the photographer is answerable to the editor, and not at all to the subject pf the picture. In corporate work, you are answerable to the client, or the design agency.

Gary Doak - loves his fill flash technique, and uses it for corporate and editorial photography

Murdo Macleod - works for the Guardian and the Observer and uses flash and ambient light mixes in nearly all of his outdoor portraits. This picture show how he does it.

Tina Norris, an editorial (magazine and newspaper) photographer. Most of her pictures look very naturally lit, which show that her use of flash is subtle.

Mike Wilkinson, another editorial and sorporate photographer who does a lot for the Sunday Times. Like most of these photographers, he is adept at using quick and controllable techniques, mixing flash and daylight.

The Graphics Cooperative - I suspect that many of these were taken with bounced flash; although it is very subtle and hard to tell - which is often the point of good flash technique. Some very good examples of corporate photography in a less commercial context.

Suki Dhanda. See if you can identify which pictures taken on location have used flash. Usually, posed portraits which look staged and well lit will have some flash. Documentary pictures of action in progress are often lit with only natural light.
