Photographic flaws

Looking at some of Lauren's pictures the other day, we were discussing lens flare. If you shoot towards the sunlight, this can cause flare and ghosting and internal reflections. The effect is often a light haze within the picture, and is often thought of as a mistake.
But, in photography, people often carefully use this technique to create a fresh and airy sunlit feel. The photographers of the clothing company Boden use it all the time. 
If you were to include an example from the Boden catalogue or website in your log books or research, this shows  how the technique is used in the real world, and can also explain and justify your use of the technique. 
What Lauren thought was a problem, can be an opportunity.
Once, a student had made some technical mistakes and was convinced she would fail the Higher. We were able to show her how the 'mistake' can be turned into a photographic style, and how to justify using that style. She got an A.
Sometimes our students think research like this is a trial, and that they can do it at home or on their own. But if you talk to us about what your're doing, we can sometimes turn your 'mistakes' into A grades...
